My Home Town
The picture above is Wallace in December - note the Christmas wreaths and bells on the lamp posts and the snow on everything.
The stop sign near the lower right is at the intersection of 5th and Bank Streets. You are looking east on Bank. Not quite visible in this photo is the traffic light at 7th Street which has the distinction of being the last traffic light on Interstate Route 90 (old Route 10). Now I-90 passes almost over Wallace and there are two on-off ramps, one at either end of town.
Historic Wallace Idaho
The historic mining town of Wallace nestles beneath Interstate 90, about midway between two world-class ski and recreation areas (Lookout Pass and Silver Mountain) in northern Idaho's beautiful Silver Valley. The Silver Valley is known as the "Silver Capital of the World" because over 1 billion ounces of silver have been mined here since 1884. Every building in downtown Wallace and many of the beautiful restored homes in our scenic neighborhoods are on the National Register of Historic Places.
With Ski and Recreation Areas within 15 miles in either direction, the area around Wallace is a year-round mountain recreation paradise. Winter hosts both alpine and cross-country skiing, as well as snowboarding and snowmobiling. With Spring come bicycling and mountain climbing, fishing, river rafting and kayaking, golf, hiking, backpacking, and ATV four-wheeling. With so many mountain trails it is easy to see why our ATV recreational area is so popular to locals and tourists alike.
The Route of the Hiawatha and the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes grow in popularity and use every year. The Route of the Hiawatha is a scenic section of abandoned rail-bed from the Milwaukee Road that The Taft Tunnel Preservation Society and the U.S. Forest Service have turned into a world class non-motorized trail. The Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes bike path follows the Union Pacific Railroad's right-of-way 72 miles from Mullan to Plummer. These are great trails to be on while enjoying our back country scenic vistas.
